Town of Lexington

Three XR experiences twenty-five town guides can drop into tours they already give — plus mobile AR off the street signage.

Overview

A municipal client rather than a private operator, which changes the brief: Lexington runs a walking-tour programme with more than twenty-five guides, so the target was not one flagship but three experiences any guide could add to their own tour on tablets and headsets, without rehearsal. Visitors stand where buildings no longer exist and see them rebuilt — the Meeting House and the Belfry — meet figures including Anna Harrington, and are put inside moments from the Battle of Lexington in April 1775.

The half I find most interesting has no guide at all: free mobile AR triggered by QR codes on city signage, for someone who walks up with a phone and no ticket. The deployment was covered by Boston’s 7NEWS in a segment titled High-Tech History.
